Skye
Seagulls
Seagulls aren’t actually a species, there are numerous different kinds of gulls.
They are usually monogamous and have the same partner for life.
They are attentive and protective parents. Both male and females take turns to incubate the eggs.
Young seagulls play with each other just as children do at nursery.
They can drink salt water and have special glands that filter out the salt.
They have sharp vision and can see more colours than humans.
They are great fliers and can fly 40 miles per hour.
They are intelligent and can use tools.
The average life span in the wild is 10-15 years, but they have been known to live for 30.
Marina
Blue Whales
Blue whales are the largest animal to have ever lived in the planet. They are up to 30 meters long, which is longer than 3 buses.
Blue whales calls are the loudest of any creature on the planet and can be heard underwater for hundreds of kilometres.
They live for 80-90 years in the wild.
Blue whales are found in all of the world’s oceans except for the Arctic.
Sadly, they have not recovered from being extensively hunted in the late 1800s and early 1900s and are classed as an endangered species.

Dolphins
Dolphins are extremely playful and curious animals. They play-fight with each other and also play with seaweed.
They sleep with one side of their brain at a time which allows them to continue to be alert to predators and rise to the surface for air.
Dolphins don’t drink water.
Dolphins have a similar life span as a human.
Dolphins have large brains – larger than a monkey.
They can swim as fast as 60 kilometers an hour.
Tidal
Sea Turtles
There are seven different species. Tidal is a Kemps Ridely Turtle.
Three of the seven are endangered: Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, the Hawksbill Turtle, and the Green Sea Turtle.
The oldest known sea turtle fossil is at least 120 million years old, which means they shared the planet with the dinosaurs.
They are not traditionally fast swimmers (swimming at around 1-6 mph) but can swim up to 22 mph when frightened.
To get rid of the excess salt they consume when eating, sea turtles have large glands by their eyes that release salt in higher concentrations than the surrounding ocean water.
Turtles can hold their breath for between 4-7 hours and slow their heartbeats to achieve this.
Humpback Whale
Humpback Whales
These whales can be found in every ocean in the world.
Some populations of humpback whales travel as far as 8,000 kilometers through open ocean each year. They move from breeding grounds in warm tropical oceans to more productive feeding grounds in colder waters.
Humpbacks are between 15 and 19 meters in length.
They can live for 90 years.
Humpbacks are the most vocal of all whales, making a great variety of sounds, from moans and cries to groans and snores. The whales string these sounds together to form ‘songs’ which can last around 20 minutes.
The whale’s ‘at risk’ status has changed from being ‘endangered’ to ‘vulnerable’.
